Every pump and sponge filter in our catalog carries a gallon range, and the planner lines those ranges up against your number. Aquarium lights carry a tank length instead, so they sit in their own table under the picker. A 10-gallon tank, for example, falls inside the Compact Air Pump, the Mini Air Pump with Wall Bracket, the Mini Internal Sponge Filter and the 50 W heater.
Treat a gallon range as a starting point. A tall tank puts your stone deeper than a long tank of the same volume, so read the MPa figure on the pump if your stones sit low. Lights go by length, not volume: measure your tank side to side in inches before you choose one.
It reads the gallon range given in each product description and shows the pumps and sponge filters whose range includes your number, along with lights by tank length. A 20-gallon tank, for example, brings up the Mini Air Pump with Wall Bracket, rated for 3 to 20 gallons.
Size up. A pump with room above your volume can be turned down with a control valve, but one at its limit has nothing left for a deeper stone or a second line. The Adjustable 80 GPH pump shows the step: its 3 W option covers 70 gallons and its 5 W option 160.
Measure the inside length, width and water depth in inches, multiply them, and divide by 231 to get US gallons. A tank 20 by 10 by 12 in holds about 10.4 gallons by that count, before gravel and decor take their share.
