Size decides most of it. The Nano Bio Sponge Filter starts at 1.5 by 3 in for tanks of 1 to 3 gallons, and the Mini Sponge Filter, 2 by 4.8 in, suits 5 to 10. Both come in options up to 60 gallons. Corners suit the Corner Sponge Filter, 3.3 by 4.9 in, shaped to fill the space a round filter leaves empty. These three run from an air pump you add.

Two filters work differently. The Electric Sponge Filter carries its own 3 W pump, pushes 70 GPH through two sponges and a tray of ceramic balls, and stays under 30 dB, for 10 to 55 gallons. Under its sponge, the Mini Internal Sponge Filter keeps a layer of filter balls. For spares, the Pre-Filter Intake Sponges cover an inlet with inner diameters from 0.4 to 1.0 in, 6 to a pack.

All 7 picks for sponge filters and their spares come from Pawfly aquarium supplies.

Questions about Pawfly sponge filter

Which Pawfly sponge filter size fits your tank?

Read the gallons on the option. The Nano Bio Sponge Filter starts at 1 to 3 gallons, and the Mini and Corner filters at up to 10. From there, options run to 50 gallons on the Corner and 60 on the Mini and Nano Bio. The Electric model comes in S for 10 to 40 gallons and M for 15 to 55.

Can you buy just the sponge for your Pawfly filter?

Yes, for three of them. The Nano Bio and Corner filters each have a Replacement Filter option, and the Mini Internal filter has a Replacement Sponges option in Small. Its white sponge is due for a change every 2 to 3 months.

Can you cut a Pawfly bio sponge pad to fit your hang-on filter?

Yes. Each Bio Sponge Filter Pad is 6.3 by 5.5 by 0.78 in, in 30 or 40 PPI foam, and you cut it to the chamber. Rinse off the dust in cool water first, set it where water enters the filter, and swap it every 2 to 4 weeks.
