Pore count is the choice here. The 30 PPI pad has larger openings for catching coarse debris as a pre-filter, while 40 PPI is finer. Each pad measures 6.3 by 5.5 by 0.78 inches of soft, foldable reticulated foam that passes water freely, and its open structure gives bacteria room once the tank has cycled.
Cut a pad to fit a sump, canister, wet/dry or hang-on chamber, and stack two grades if the space allows, since one pad is under an inch thick. Rinse new pads in cool water to clear the dust. Packs come as 4 or 12 at 30 PPI and 6 or 12 at 40 PPI.
